For Trades & Builders

Tradie signs that win the next job while you’re on this one.

Ute and van lettering, job-site signs, builder boards and stickers for the gear, all printed in our own workshop and matched to the same branding. One supplier for the whole kit, and no minimum order.

In Short

Signage that works as hard as you do.

In short

Tradie signs are the handful of signs a trade business actually needs: lettering on the ute or van, a sign on the fence at every job, a builder’s board where the law requires one, and stickers for the toolboxes and gear. Done together, they look like one business rather than four suppliers’ guesses at your logo.

We print and cut all of it at our Ravenhall workshop and fit the vehicle work ourselves. One ute is a job we want, not one we tolerate.

Made by Melbourne Trade Signs, a large-format print and signage company at Unit 6/43 Orbis Drive, Ravenhall VIC 3023, in Melbourne’s west. Printed in-house and installed Australia-wide. Phone 0415 743 691, Monday to Friday, 8am to 7pm.

Most new work for a trade business comes from being seen: the ute parked outside a job, the sign on the neighbour’s fence, the van at the lights. Signage is paid for once and then works every day for years, which makes it the cheapest advertising a tradie ever buys.

The trick is restraint. Your business name, what you do, and a phone number big enough to read from across the street will win more calls than a vehicle covered in every service you have ever offered.

Starting from scratch on a tight budget? Do the vehicle first, then job-site signs. Those two get seen the most for the least money. Everything else can follow as the work does.

Ute & Van Signage

Lettering the work vehicle.

For most trades, cut lettering plus a printed decal set on the doors, tray and tailgate does the job for a fraction of the price of a wrap. A lettering kit is usually applied in a few hours once the vinyl is produced. A full wrap takes days, because trim comes off and the vinyl has to be post-heated into every recess.

Cut lettering and decals in a quality cast or polymeric vinyl typically give five years or more of presentable service on a vehicle that lives outdoors. We print and cut the vinyl in Ravenhall and our own team applies it, which matters on curved panels, rivets and tray edges.

What to put on a ute

  • Business name, as big as the panel comfortably allows.
  • What you do, in plain words: plumbing, electrical, landscaping.
  • One phone number, the biggest thing after your name, sized to read from across the street.
  • Optional: your website or a service area. Leave the full list of services for the website.

Leased, novated or the family car?

Two options. Magnetic door signs come off by hand at the end of the day. See magnetic car signs. Or removable vehicle vinyls, which are usually fine on leased vehicles, but check the lease terms first. Tell us it is leased and we will spec materials that come off cleanly at the end. More on lettering, partial and full wraps on our vehicle signage page.

On the Job

Builder signs and job-site signs.

Job-site signs are the corflute boards that go on the fence while you are working: your name, your trade and your number. 600 × 900 mm is the common size, and 5 mm board survives being taken down, thrown in the ute and put back up every week. Corflute typically lasts six to eighteen months outdoors, so it suits signs that move from job to job.Builders have an extra obligation. In Victoria, the Building Regulations require a sign on site showing the builder’s and building surveyor’s registration and contact details and the building permit number. Most builders combine it with their branding so the compulsory sign doubles as advertising. Our site signage page sets out exactly what has to be on it, along with safety signage for the site.

Running a long build? Put the permanent board on ACM and keep corflute for the messages that change. See the sign materials guide for the difference.

The Gear

Tradie stickers that stay on.

Logo stickers for toolboxes, equipment cases, ute windows and the office door. For anything that lives outdoors or in the back of a ute, the sticker gets a laminate. That is the spec, not an upgrade, and laminated outdoor vinyl typically holds three to five years.

Asset and equipment labels with numbers are worth doing once you have more than a few people on the tools: it is much easier to get gear back from a site when it is clearly yours. See custom stickers and labels.

Questions

Tradie Sign FAQs.

What should go on a tradie ute?

Keep it to your business name, what you do and one phone number, sized so the number reads from across the street. A website or service area is optional. Lists of every service you offer make the important parts smaller and harder to read.

What signage does a new trade business need first?

Vehicle lettering first, then job-site signs for the fence. Those two get seen the most for the least money. Stickers, a builder’s board (if you are a builder) and a workshop sign can follow.

How long does ute lettering last?

Cut lettering and decals in a quality cast or polymeric vinyl typically give five years or more of presentable service on a vehicle that lives outdoors. Full wraps in cast vinyl are usually quoted in the five to seven year range.

Can you put signs on a leased or novated ute?

Yes. Magnetic door signs come off by hand whenever you like, or removable vehicle vinyls come off cleanly when the vehicle goes back. Check your lease terms first if you go with vinyl.

Do you make magnetic signs for cars?

Yes. We print and cut custom car door magnets in Ravenhall. They suit private, leased and shared cars because they come off by hand, as long as the door panel is steel. See magnetic car signs.

What are builder signs?

Builder signs usually means the boards on a building site: the compulsory sign showing the builder, building surveyor and permit details in Victoria, plus branded job-site signs on the fence. We print both, on corflute for short jobs and ACM for long builds.

Do you make stickers for toolboxes and equipment?

Yes. Laminated vinyl stickers in your logo, cut to shape, for toolboxes, equipment and ute windows, plus numbered asset labels. Laminated outdoor vinyl typically holds three to five years.

Is there a minimum order?

No. One ute, one sign or one sheet of stickers is fine, and we keep your artwork on file so the next vehicle or job sign matches the first.
